Creative Hobbies Project. Sneakers with Sharpies.

This is a project that I did for the 

Creative Hobbies magazine, Issue 10. 

The Pilot Frixion Pen is a miracle. 

(those are the red lines on the tekkie)

As you can see, you draw what you want, colour 

the drawings with your sharpies. Outline the 

images with your black marker and then make

 the red lines disappear with the heat of a hairdryer. 

I used surgical spirit to blend the colours.

Unlike the decoupaged tekkies, these are waterproof

and ideally suited for kids.

Decorated Tekkies

It is March.... the last time I posted was in December.

Before we breathe again in will be June...

Are we keeping up?

Anyway, we had a tekkie class earlier this month and it was 

huge fun. The ladies are entering their Tekkies into a competetion!

None of them had ever decorated a tekkie before.

The pink tekkies were made by a Grade 5 girl. 

All of them turned out beautifully.

I am glad that I am not the judge.

Stunning tekkies

One thing about the tekkies, you never know what the end result will look like.

That is always exciting.You get involved in the pair that you are creating and 

don't notice what is happening next to you. 

There are always a few "Wow, that beautiful !"

  

We also had a special guest Emma, who came with Ann and  

at first was very interested in what we did,

but later decided that it wasn't really her thing.

Then she retired to her private spot from where she could 

watch all of us.

Sussie all into turquoise, which she says she normally doesn't do... 

 Lorna going for green and Natalie for blue.

Annitta and Antonet halfway through it and relaxing a bit.

Lisa in deep concentration to get it right....

and she did! It looked stunning.

Thanks girls for a lovely morning. I think all your tekkies looked stunning!

Getting ready for the tekkie class

There are water buckets, paint brushes, paint, gel medium,

stamps, water spray bottles and lots of other stuff on my studio table.

Yesterday I spent the day cleaning the studio. Today, I spent the day 

getting everything ready for the class on Saturday.

That included getting the samples ready of the Distress paints

 I want to use instead of the normal acrylic paints and sealing them with

gel medium to see if they are water resistant.

Two of them were not!

It was the first two that I bought a couple of years ago.

Terracotta and Lettuce.

The others are fine and didn't react to the gel medium being painted over them.

Interesting....

All I still need, is a couple of plastic sheets to cover the tables

and then I am ready for the class.

Glitter on my sneakers

Last night I painted the sneakers and it was a surprise to see them this morning. 

Normally I use Dala Sun paint on the sneakers, but I wanted this colour 

and couldn't figure out how to mix it. So I used Acrylic paint.

 Dala Sun paint is very fluid and the canvas of your sneakers doesn't

become hard or stiff when it is dry. 

I used the excess paint to stain the laces.

They have a very distressed look to them.

Now I need to do the bling!! 

I like the colour and the glitter. 

Shiny but not to shiny.

Cotton Canvas Sneaker Trouble.

Glitter, the trouble is glitter!

You need sparkle in your life and you need to

 leave a little sparkle where ever you go!

So the next thing is glitter for my tekkies.

I am still figuring it out how to get the glitter to stick to the tekkies

so that my you won't be able to follow my glitter trail all the way home.

Fabric medium or Gel medium will surely do it.

I hope to get them done before next week.

The Space!

I am slowly moving into my new space and I am loving it!

The sun is still shining through the window, the music is playing and

there is paint and paper and glue and stuff...

what more can I want?

 

 

It is so easy to fill up a space with craft supplies.

 

 

I also had my first class last Saturday.

The Magic of Cotton Canvas Sneekers.

As I said before, this class is magic.

I think we must have this as a standard class

every two months.

On Saturday Nicolette, Else, Marlene,

Michelle and Marlene had great fun.

 

These tiny, tiny baby tekkies were gorgeous!

Decorated with Beatrix Potter pictures, everyone

wanted to have them and they were the hit of the day.

 

The music notes were popular and as you can see,

most of the girls used them.

 

Using a black and white serviette can also be very effective.

This can be combined with a little bit of gold and silver paint

for extra interest.

 



To colour the shoe laces, I sprayed each pair with some water and then

sprayed the Sun paint onto the laces.

By squeezing the paint into the laces, you use less paint and

your drying time is much shorter.

 

A contrast colour for the laces looks stunning...... 

 

But as you can see, the same colour also is a perfect match!

Butterfly Tekkies

During this class everyone decided to use napkins with butterflies on them.

All of the tekkies turned out beautifully.

 

 

 



 

I know that some of the girls have orders for tekkies.

Herannies in Centurion has lots of serviettes that they sell in packets of two,

so you don't have to buy a packet of 20.

 

Altered Tekkies Class - 26 January

This class is a winner!

It is unbelievable how different the tekkies (sneakers) turn out.

Each person has their own vision and by using the colours in the

serviette (napkin) to guide you, you cannot make a mistake.

We started by misting the tekkies with water. Then we applied the

paint. Sometimes one colour, sometimes two.

Then you let the paint dry. In the meantime you cut out the
pictures from the serviettes. Remove the back layers and 
adhere the pictures to the tekkies by using the gel medium.

 

Allow the gel medium to completely dry before you do your acrylic

paint stamping and your Archival ink stamping.

Remember to dye your shoe laces with the paint as well.

The two tekkies don't have to look exactly the same, but there must be

balance when you place them next to one another.



Even pink on pink worked, although you think it might not!

We added some bling to give it a bit of sparkle.

Altered Tekkies at Variety Packaging

Elna & I presented our first two workshops for 2012 at Variety Packaging last week.  At both workshops, our guests had an opportunity to create their own Altered Tekkies.
